Training Workshop on Packaging Rice

Training for new suppliers was carried out to show them how the bags of rice are to be cleaned, weighed, packed tagged and Quality Checked, before dispatch.

Inspection – Zonal Agricultural Officers Inspect Fields for Damage from Cyclone Phyan
1st Dec, 2009

On the 1st of December, Tiswadi Zonal Agricultural Office representatives, Ms. Neelima Gawas and Mr. Joshi met with farmers from the Chorao Farmers Club, along with the Talathi, Mr. Kedar Bhandari, to inspect crops and fields damaged during Cyclone Phyan. A Technical Report with recommendations from the ZAO will be forwarded to the Mamlatdar, who will make a final decision on the compensation to be paid.

Demonstration – Establishing a Nursery for Exotic Vegetables
30th Nov, 2009

ICAR’s Program Coordinador, Dr. Rajnarayan, demonstrated the setting up of a nursery for exotic vegetables like capsicum, Chinese cabbage and broccoli. After 20-25 days the seedlings will be ready for transplanting. Till then, they need to be watered twice a day. He also discussed the use of Trichoderma for the prevention of diseases.

Workshop – Making Bio-inputs for the Winter Crop
2nd Nov, 2009

ICAR scientist, Dr. Hiralal Prabhudesai led a workshop on making bio-inputs for the farm on the 2nd of November. He demonstrated how these inputs are to be prepared and also discussed the manner of application. Several of these preparations are based on EM. Workshop – Growing Exotic Vegetables in Goa
14th Sept 2009

The Club, in conjunction with TERI, organised a half-day workshop on Growing Exotic Vegetables in Goa, on the 14th of Sept. Faculty from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) spoke on the different kinds of non-traditional vegetables that have been successfully grown in Goa and how these can be grown safely, without the use of chemicals.

Demonstration – Mechanised Paddy Transplantation
20th July 2009

Demonstration held by the Club with support from TERI, the Dpt. of Agriculture, KVK, NABARD and Society of Pilar. Several Club members and other residents from Chorao and nearby villages came to see the functioning of an 8-Row Paddy Transplanting machine. The even was preceded by several presentations regarding mechanisation of agriculture in Goa.

Workshop – KVK Organises Pre-Monsoon Paddy Clinic

Objective: The purpose pf the pre-monsoon paddy clinic was to help farmers plan for the coming monsoon paddy crop, discuss possible organic treatments for their crops, carry out problem-solving where needed and distribute basic farm inputs like seeds, lime and trichoderma. Several farmers attending the workshop brought soil samples from their fields. These will be tested and results will help famers treat their fields for this and the next season.

Workshop – Towards Sustainable Farming

Objective: The aim of this workshop is to provide farmers a first-hand account of what it mean to manage farms ‘organically’ as well as identify clear options for the Club to take steps towards organic farming in their context.

On Farm Trials (OFT)
Monsoon 2008

Under the guidance of the ICAR/KVK, 3 farmers from the Club volunteered to try growing different varieties of paddy and groundnuts along with a set of practices as suggested.  Namita Khandeparkar, Jyoti Honkar and Mukund Khandeparkar undertook this trial. The first two grew different varieties of rice, and the latter undertook the trial of growing a confectionary variety of groundnut, called Asha. Mukund was very satisfied with his yield and profitability of growing this variety of groundnuts. Namita and Jyoti also reported satisfactory results from growing Revathy and MO-9 varieties of rice.

Workshop: Organic Methods used in Growing Paddy

At this meeting, KVK resource person Dr. Hirala Prabhudesai demonstrated the use of EM Technology in preparing fertilizers and pesticides to be used for the paddy crop. Preparations included EM-2, Bokashi and Fermented Plant Extract (FPE).

Workshop: Meeting of all SHGs in Chodan and Madel
12th March, 2008

Women from the Club are also a part of SHGs. Thus the purpose of this meeting was to understand the state of the SHGs in the village, the number of women involved, the kinds of activities undertaken, money saved etc… An assessment was made regarding what kinds of agriculture/farming related activities that the SHGs are involved in and to what extent the Club could associate, be involved or facilitate some of the activities of the SHGs
